The Alberta Ombudsman’s outreach and engagement efforts this past November included events featuring Alberta municipalities and meetings with organizations representing vulnerable Albertans.
Following province-wide elections on October 20, 2025, large trade shows in Calgary and Edmonton this past November brought together administrators, staff, and elected officials from Alberta’s municipalities.
The Ombudsman and members of his office were pleased to attend these events, with the goal of increasing awareness about our role investigating complaints of unfairness in the administration of municipal services. We also shared insights from our work and directed people to our online Municipal Resource Library.
Our outreach work in November also created opportunities to connect with community organizations supporting vulnerable individuals and families, part of our ongoing efforts to make sure that every Albertan’s voice is heard.
November outreach and engagement:
Alberta Municipalities Trade Show. Staff from the Ombudsman’s office were at the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre November 12-13 to connect with municipalities from all over Alberta, including summer villages, towns, cities, villages, and specialized municipalities.
YW Calgary. YW is a non-profit organization with over 300 staff that support women and families through programs that focus on domestic violence, housing services, childcare, parental assistance, and more. We exchanged insights and learned more about the important work they do, with the aim of receiving referrals from their clients.
Rural Municipalities of Alberta Trade Show. On November 18-19, Ombudsman staff hosted an exhibitor booth and connected with representatives from Alberta’s 69 counties and municipal districts. A highlight of the event was delivering a presentation on the topic of best practices for working with clients who exhibit complex behaviours.
Treaty 8 Health Authority. Closing out a busy month of public engagement was a presentation to this new authority, stemming from an initial meet-and-greet in October. The Treaty 8 Health Authority will administer a program focused on enhancing access, education, and advocacy across Alberta’s health system. Staff from the Ombudsman’s office shared insights from our administrative fairness guidelines as a valuable tool for assessing fairness.
