When Mike Good, Deputy Ombudsman / Deputy Public Interest Commissioner, made a visit to Westlock, the message was clear: fairness in every community counts.
Meeting face-to-face with community organizations and attending regional events is part of the offices’ ongoing outreach efforts to enhance awareness. The Ombudsman’s office is committed to ensuring that every Albertan’s voice is heard, and our office is only a phone call away.
Healthy Families Healthy Futures Society
The first stop was a staff meeting with Healthy Families Healthy Futures Society, an organization offering home visitation and early intervention programs that support families across a wide stretch of northern Alberta. Their experience in early intervention provides important insight into where systems can be strengthened to better serve families in need.
Hope Resource Centre
Next, we met with the Executive Director of the Hope Resource Centre Association, which provides wraparound supports for individuals experiencing family violence, trauma, or housing instability.
We valued the informative discussion, including insights into the challenges their clients are facing when attempting to access public services.
Soul Sisters Memorial Foundation
The day continued with the executive team at the Soul Sisters Memorial Foundation, a grassroots group committed to suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Their work includes hosting community events and delivering workshops that reduce stigma and improve access to support. As a trusted voice in the community, Soul Sisters is helping to build a culture of care and resilience.
2025 Alberta Association of Police Governance Conference
To wrap up the day, the Alberta Ombudsman’s office delivered a presentation to attendees at the 2025 Annual Alberta Association of Police Governance Conference. The session focused on the role of the Ombudsman in ensuring fairness across public systems and provided an opportunity to answer questions and discuss real-life examples of how oversight supports better outcomes.
Staying connected with communities across Alberta is essential to our work. The outreach in Westlock reminds us of the importance of building trust and listening to the voices of those most in need of public service. These conversations help shape how our office approaches oversight and ensures that we remain up-to-date with the challenges facing Albertans.
