Elected Officials & Elections

The Alberta Ombudsman does not have jurisdiction over elected officials, political decisions of elected officials, or elections. This includes councillors, mayors, Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), or Members of Parliament (MP).

Municipal Elected Officials

The Municipal Government Act requires that every municipality in Alberta have a Code of Conduct bylaw. If your concerns relate to the actions or conduct of a municipal councillor, you can find out more about the municipality’s code of conduct by reviewing their bylaws or asking for information from the municipality.

You can learn more about when the Alberta Ombudsman may become involved with a municipality, here.

Office of the Ethics Commissioner

The Alberta Ombudsman does not investigate alleged breaches of the Conflicts of Interest Act by MLAs. For these types of complaints, contact the Office of the Ethics Commissioner.
