Private Matters
No. The Alberta Ombudsman does not have jurisdiction to investigate complaints about disputes between private employers and employees. Many employment-related disputes are governed by provincial legislation and can be resolved with the assistance of government organizations—we can investigate complaints about those organizations if you feel they have not treated you fairly.
Unionized Employment
The Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) is the independent and impartial tribunal responsible for the day-to-day application and interpretation of Alberta’s labour laws. To raise your concerns, visit Alberta Labour Relations Board.
Non-unionized Employment
Employment Standards set out the rights and obligations of employers and employees in Alberta. This includes the minimum standards that employers must provide to employees. To access rules, regulations or to make a complaint visit Employment Standards.
Landlord/Tenant Issues
The Alberta Ombudsman’s office does not have jurisdiction to investigate disputes between private individuals. If you have concerns regarding landlord/tenant issues contact the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service (RTDRS).
If you receive a decision from the RTDRS that you believe is unfair, you can submit a complaint to us.
