Under the Health Professions Act,
the Alberta Ombudsman is the designated third party
review mechanism for citizens who have complaints about one
of the 28 health professional bodies specified in the legislation.
Examples of the health profession associations include dentists,
nurses, doctors, psychologists and physical therapists.
This legislation has received Royal Assent and the filing
of associated legislative schedules is being assembled. To
date, the following health professions are jurisdictional:
- Chiropractors
- Dentists
- Denturists
- Dental Assistants
- Dental Hygienists
- Dental Technologists
- Hearing Aid Practitioners
- Licensed Practical Nurses
- Optometrists
- Social Workers
- Medical Laboratory Technologists
- Pharmacists
- Registered Dietitians and Registered Nutritionists
- Speech–Language Pathologists and Audiologists
- Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists and Electroneurophysiologists
- Occupational Therapists
- Psychologists
- Registered Nurses
- Registered Psychiatric and Mental Deficiency Nurses
- Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technicians
- Physicians, Surgeons, Osteopaths and Podiatrists
- Respiratory Therapists
As more health professions become jurisdictional, they will be added to the list.
